Pippy: Expanded Children's Health
Insurance Program in Effect
New law provides coverage to more families.
Harrisburg – Expansion of the state's
Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) is now in effect and
applications are available, according to state Sen. John Pippy (R-37).
Pippy said that, under legislation
approved by the General Assembly last year, CHIP will offer free or
low-cost health insurance to more children in 2007, and urged eligible
residents in her district to learn more about the program.
"CHIP provides free or low-cost health
insurance for children whose families earn too much to qualify for
Medical Assistance, but not enough to purchase private health insurance.
The program has been expanded to cover more families. So, if you don't
have health insurance coverage for your children, please look into this
assistance. You may think you don't qualify, but there is a good chance
that you do, under the new guidelines," said Pippy.
The coverage includes medical, dental,
vision and prescription drug benefits at a reduced rate. Parents will
pay a monthly premium based on the family's income.
Under the program, a family of four
making $40,000 or less would pay no premium for health insurance. The
premium would increase per month for higher income amounts. A family of
four making under $60,000 would pay an average monthly premium per child
of $60.
Pippy said other CHIP eligibility
requirements do apply: children must be Pennsylvania residents, not
eligible for Medicaid or have any other health insurance, and meet
citizenship requirements.
