Moon Area School District to Receive Federal Funding for Safe Routes to School

Harrisburg – Sen. John Pippy (R-37) and Rep. Mark Mustio today announced that the Pennsylvania Community Transportation Initiative has awarded the Moon Area School District a $70,096 Federal grant under the Safe Routes to Schools Project.

The grant will be used to create safer walking routes to connect J.H. Brooks Elementary School and McCormick Elementary School to neighboring residential areas. Sidewalks will be installed along Hassam Road and Beaver Grade Road, which serve the schools.

"I am pleased with the decision of the Pennsylvania Community Transportation Initiative to consider and award the Moon Area School District with the Safe Routes to School grant. This project will provide a safer trip for those students who walk or bike to school while reducing fuel consumption and promoting a healthier, more active lifestyle," said Sen. Pippy.

Rep. Mark Mustio added, "The Safe Routes to Schools Project will provide those children who choose to walk or bike to school with a much safer trip.  The safety of our children is a priority to both parents and educators.  It is good when our tax dollars can come back to our community to help insure the safety of our children."

The Pennsylvania Community Transportation Initiative (PCTI) was developed by PennDOT. The initiative serves to create and implement projects that promote integrated land use and transportation by developing smart transportation. It is the goal of PCTI to link land use and transportation to create better communities and improve regional connectivity.
